Classroom management is about understanding behaviors and how
the function of these behaviors can be substituted for a more appropriate behavior.
Behaviors can disrupt the student's learning or the learning
of students around him/her, can cause harm to the student or others around him/her or cause the student to be socially
excluded. These behaviors can cause other problem behaviors or emotional reations in the student or others around
the student. The inappropriate behavior even may be related to a medical condition.
These are all factors that teachers and behavior specialists must
look at and look for when trying to find the function of a student's behavior. Students don't behave 'badly' for no reason.
In order to do away with a behavior that is not benefitting a student, an acceptable behavior within a reinforcement and/or
reduction strategy plan must be formulated and be ready to replace the unacceptable behavior.
